With M. Knoedler & Co., New York; with Wildenstein & Co., New York, 1969; sold to Charlotte Dorrance Wright (d. 1977) and William Coxe Wright (1911-1970), St. Davids, PA, December 1969, until his d. 1970 [1]; Charlotte Dorrance Wright; bequest to PMA, 1978. 1. Although the 1977 Dorrance Wright estate inventory by Carroll Hogan (registrar file) states that the Wrights acquired the painting from Knoedler, a letter from Eliot W. Rowlands of Wildenstein & Co. dated March 15, 1982 (American Art Department curatorial file) states that Wildenstein sold the painting to Mr. Wright in December 1969 and that they had acquired it earlier that year. As there are labels on the back resembling those of Knoedler, it is possible Wildenstein acquired the painting from them or that it was jointly owned.
